After I moved into my new apartment in Echo Park I happened to look out the window one day, on the upper level, and my eyes met with a man standing near the gate. I was drinking coffee, or brushing my teeth, I forget which, and my gaze didn’t waver because I’d forgotten that I was visible. I thought that he was being rude for staring like that, so I stared back. Soon, his friend turned to look up at me also, and the first man pointed. Then, I suddenly felt flushed and walked to the center of the room where they couldn’t see me, and waited several minutes until the sound of their voices faded.
